Shimmering Tall Ships and Spectacular Fireworks! 2018 Nagasaki Tall Ships Festival, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture

Nagasaki City: A Diverse Range of Attractions

Nagasaki City developed as Japan’s gateway for foreign trade during the Edo period’s isolationist policy. This city offers a wide variety of attractions, allowing visitors to explore and enjoy the city in their own unique way.

“Hashima,” commonly known as “Gunkanjima” (Battleship Island), played a crucial role in Japan’s industrial revolution during the Meiji era and has been registered as a World Heritage Site.

The city is also home to numerous churches and cathedrals, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Catholicism. In stark contrast, Nagasaki also serves as a solemn reminder of the devastation caused by the atomic bomb, with memorials such as the Peace Statue.

Furthermore, the night view from Mount Inasa, counted among Japan’s top three nightscapes, is breathtaking. The panoramic, three-dimensional view of Nagasaki’s illuminated cityscape is a must-see for any visitor.

The festival is relatively new, with the first event held in 2000 to commemorate 400 years of Japan-Netherlands relations. During the festival, visitors can explore the interiors of the ships, take cruises around Nagasaki Port, and participate in various activities such as yacht and canoe rides, rope work classes, and a market featuring local products, bringing the event to life.

Even More Stunning at Night

As night falls, the tall ships are illuminated, and around 1,000 fireworks light up the sky. The harbor, free of tall buildings, provides a perfect view of the dazzling display.

For the best experience, it is recommended to watch the fireworks from a night view spot. The sea will reflect the glowing lights of the ships, the land will display a panoramic nightscape, and the sky will be filled with colorful fireworks. This magnificent collaboration of lights offers a truly luxurious visual feast. Don’t miss this unforgettable combination of scenery and fireworks.
